When I am asked about eating popped corn (“Is it good nutrition?” “ One can’t eat too much of it, right?”), I usually give the facts about the kernels of corn: low calories, high fiber, sodium free, high complex carbohydrate, etc. I then give my personal way to prepare it.
Plan:
• Secure a plain brown paper lunch bag
• Place approximately ¼ cup of the cheapest bulk or plastic bagged popcorn in the bag
• Fold the top and secure with a small piece of scotch tape or strapping tape
• Set the bag in the center of a micro-wave oven
• Cook on HIGH setting until the popping almost stops (stay at the oven and monitor closely the popping sound)
• When the popping almost stops, quickly remove the bag, break it open and pour into a large bowl
• Put a generous amount of nothing on it and enjoy!
Question: “No butter or salt, what does it taste like?”
Answer: (Are you ready? This is really a novel idea!) “It tastes like popped corn!”
(What a novel approach. Eat something this week that you have never really tasted before because it was always covered with something else.)
