Heard these?
· “She’s always on a diet.”
· “I need to lost weight. I am going on a diet.”
· “I’m going on the ____________________ Diet. (You fill in the blank. Examples are Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, grapefruit, Zone, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Target, American Heart Association, South Beach, etc.
· “It’s not a diet. It’s a lifestyle change.”
· “That’s what I like about this plan: It is not a diet!”
The word “diet” is a generic word. It means how you eat, what you eat. Everybody eats, thus everybody is on a diet.
How does this work?
The human body works best when your diet (how and what you eat) addresses the following:
· The daily calorie count is around 2000.
· Fiber intake is around 30 grams/day. (fruits/veg/grains)
· 10 – 15 % of your calories are protein
· 55 – 75 % of your calories are complex carbohydrates (fruits/veg/grains)
· 10 – 30 % of your calories are fat (a 10% fat level will reverse heart disease)
· 1200 – 1500 mg of calcium are needed each day
· 1 gram (1000 mg) or less of dietary sodium
· Fats - soft at room temperature (liquid) are less damaging than hard fats
